Kat Katz (they/them) is a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) in Maryland. They received a Bachelor’s degree in biology emphasizing the genetics and neurophysiology of mental illness from Smith College. After several years working in community mental health as a residential counselor, case manager, and community support specialist, Kat continued their education at Smith College and achieved a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree.
As an intern at Sound Behavioral Health in Seattle and Johns Hopkins Community Psychiatry Program, Kat provided individual and group psychotherapy to diverse populations virtually and in-person. Their past volunteer experience includes counseling people on a suicide hotline and giving information and emotional support to people on the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) HelpLine.
Kat uses a strength-based, multifaceted approach to problem solving and treating mental health conditions, through a multicultural lens. They draw from cognitive behavioral (CBT), psychodynamic, and narrative therapies to adapt tools and techniques to each individual. Kat uses Gottman Level 1 training to help clients cultivate healthy boundaries and close relationships. They encourage mindfulness, creativity, and artistic expression in coping with mental health challenges.
Kat identifies as non-binary and queer (click here to learn about gender and sexual identities) and enjoys working with the LGBTQIA+ community. They are sex-, kink-, and consensual non-monogamy-positive.
In their free time, Kat writes poetry, sings, and practices yoga. They especially appreciate cuddling up with their kitties and a good book.
